The Jersey
This orange alternate is our favorite for obvious reasons. In addition to being the Astros signature orange this jersey is Filthy- adding a lot of eye appeal!
The Game
This jersey is authenticated to the 7/8/16 contest at MMP vs. Oakland. Altuve had a great game going 2-5 with 1 RBI (Season #50) and scoring two runs! He also stole his 23rd base of the season.
Altuve led off the 4th inning with a single and scored on Correa’s home run to pull the Astros within one of the A’s who got out to an early 3-0 lead. Altuve would then knock in the go-ahead run in the fifth before being called out at home trying to score on a Correa single. In the 9th and down two runs, Altuve would single and steal second before scoring on Luis Valbuena’s walk-off home run! This was Valbuena’s second career walk-off HR and only walk-off HR with the Astros. This is one of the most memorable moments of Valbuena’s career (we all remember the batflip) and arguably his most significant with a whopping wWPA of 79%!
Is This Jersey For Me?
This jersey hits all the right notes and would make a welcome addition to the collection of even the most discriminating collectors. Firstly, the jersey has significant eye appeal.
Secondly, the jersey is authenticated to a great performance by Altuve - driving in runs, stealing a base, and scoring in high leverage situations. This performance being punctuated by a memorable moment in Astros history.
2016 was also a breakout season for Altuve with him adding power (24 HRs) to his hitting prowess while leading the lead in hits (216) and earning his second of three batting titles. Altuve finished third in MVP voting as well. His 7.9 bWAR in 2016 exceeds the 7.7 recorded in his 2017 MVP season and is fifth all-time in single season position player WAR for the franchise. (Translation: this jersey is from one of the five best offensive seasons in Astros history)
Lastly, the authentication of this jersey to this game will serve as a reminder of Altuve’s relationship with his fellow countryman, Luis Valbuena, may he rest in peace.
