Gerrit Cole 2018 Game Used Jersey-Astros Record
The Player
Gerrit Cole is the highest paid pitcher of all-time. He is a perennial Cy Young candidate and his current WAR, Wins, Ks, ERA, and postseason performance are on track for Cooperstown- being more than halfway there already.
The Jersey
The Sunday Blue Alternate has been enjoyed by Astros fans regularly since 2016. A small vocal group even find it as their favorite. Among current jersey styles, it is notable for not having a number on the front. We like the ‘team first’ ethos communicated by this design.
This is the first Sunday alternate jersey worn by Cole.
The Game
Cole wore this jersey on Sunday April 29, 2018 vs. the Athletics at MMP in front of 39,000 fans. This was Cole’s fourth appearance at MMP. This game he broke the April club record for strikeouts with 61 and became only the fourth pitcher in franchise history to record 60+ strikeouts in any calendar month- joining Richard in ‘79 (twice: 62, 69), Scott in ‘86 (64), and Johnson in ‘98 (61). Cole went 6.2 innings earning 12 Ks. Additional game highlights included striking out the side swinging in the 2nd inning (Davis, Olson, Chapman) and striking out Olson swinging in three straight plate appearances.
Cole was at the top of his form during this stretch. Cole’s first month with the team he made six starts (2-1 record with a 1.73 ERA) with the Astros going 5-1. He averaged nearly 7 innings per contest and recorded 61 strikeouts - a club record for the month of April. His next start (5/4) would be the best of his career pitching a one-hit shutout and striking out 16.
