2017 Brian McCann Game Used Players Weekend Jersey
The Player
Brian McCann was the Astros starting catcher in 2017 and 2018. The seven-time All-Star and six Silver Slugger winner brought a lot of experience to the 2017 Championship team. His lefty bat was needed and behind the plate he was a major aid to the team pitching efforts. Brian McCann would finish his career a year after leaving the Astros. His career accolades including 282 career homeruns will certainly have him on the shortlist of best catchers to ever play the game.
The Jersey
This one-of-a-kind jersey was worn during the inaugural Players Weekend festivities. Sadly the weekend was overshadowed by the utter devastation being wrought by Hurricane Harvey. This jersey was worn by Brian for all three games. Brian declined to add a nickname to his jersey going ‘old school’ (as is his reputation) and using his last name.
The Game
Brian played on Saturday (1-4, Run) and Sunday (2-4, 4RBI, 3B). His Sunday performance was notable as he logged his third and final 4RBI game as an Astro. He also had the play of the game on Sunday hitting a go-ahead base-clearing triple in the top of the eighth inning. This was McCann’s fifth and final career triple.
Brian came up to bat vs. Cam Bedrosian with two outs and the bases loaded- the Astros were down a run. Brian laced the first pitch to right field scoring Altuve, Reddick, and Gurriel. This play was one of the biggest by wWPA at 55% and one of the biggest of McCann’s career. Sadly few Houstonians saw it as they were struggling in the midst of the storm.
Brian’s triple secured a series win and stopped the bleeding on an abysmal August the Astros endured. This series was the beginning of the uplift that progressed through the Harvey return sweep of the Mets, the Verlander trade, and the September performances that extended into October leading to the 2017 World Series victory!
This jersey was obtained directly from the Astros and is authenticated by MLB.
